Day 3 Carlsbad, climbing

Workout Summary: Bike 75 miles (8050 ft/5:53)

Well, it wasnt the 7600 feet of climbing in the first 41 miles that thrashed the legs....the major climb up Mt Paloma was about 4400 ascent over 7 miles....all on a dirt road...much of it soft and washed out with ruts, rocks, ect. That was about the most difficult climb I have ever done. Took 1:29 to do. Temp started at 60 degrees, and the final 1400 ft in the clouds dropped to 35-40 degrees. I stopped counting the swithbacks at 4000 ft, 22 of them. Went from pouring sweat off my forehead to completely frozen feet and numb hands for the 30 min. descent (yeah...we found the PAVED road from the top, and took it down). I'm tired...I'm going to eat now.

OK, big plate of pasta and hot shower.

Mt Paloma: Ascent 4110 ft, 7.9 miles, ave grade 9.7%...dirt road
time to climb 1:29

HR Summary:
0 = 10% (35')
1 = 54% (3:10)
2 = 13% (46')
3 = 13% (46')
4 = 10% (35')
5a = .3% (1')

Ride of 75 miles. Road 30 min after dark, coming back on a state hwy with no shoulder. When a semi truck came within 2 feet of us...I decided enough is enough...we were'nt going to make it back. We stopped at the next intersection, and at a store, a guy offerred to take us back. Fortunately it was only around 6 miles.

Diet:
Breakfast: 3 med sized pancakes, 2 , 16 oz glasses of skim milk
Ride: 1 gel, 30 oz nutrition bottle with 150 grams carbs.
Dinner: Pasta with meat sauce, 2 slices garlic bread, salad. Dad had the pasta waiting for us so I was eating immediately when I got home...so I didnt take recovery drink.
Before bed: 2 pieces of chocolate and 2 glasses of red wine.
