Feels a little wierd with my right hand weakness. Havent said anything on the blog because I wanted to see the Neurologist first. My right 4/5th fingers have been numb for about 6 weeks, and just before Kona, I noticed I couldnt turn a key or open a door with my right hand due to increasing weakness. It was strange to swim Kona with my 4/5th fingers unable to stay with the rest of my hand...they would just float freely as I stroked. It hasnt gotten any better since.
I had an EMG by the Neurologist yesterday and the Ulnar nerve isnt conducting below my elbow. They believe that its likely from a blood clot or hematoma that formed while cycling and it put too much pressure on the nerve and knocked it out. That's good news actually. The damage is due to a peripheral neuropathy (distant to the spinal cord and brain) which means its not a central problem like multiple sclerosis or brachial plexus injury/tumor ect.
She feels the strength will slowly come back but it may take another 1-2 months. The feeling in my digits should return also. If not better at all over the next month, she said there is a chance the nerve is damaged permanently. We'll see. I am pretty hopeful and confident it will pass. I was advised to not bike in my aero bars until end of feb. and not bike at all for the next month, and no swimming. I can handle the bike advice, but there is no way I am avoiding the pool. This is a pressure related problem, the passive resistence in the pool shouldnt hurt it that much.
