Calling Audibles and the "stair test"

So,
I cancelled my Swim and run, as well as leg weights yesterday and took the entire day off.
I shifted yesterdays 3500 meter swim to today, tuesday. Yet, still could not do the run scheduled.

My legs are unusually tired, as evident by my miserable failure during the "stair test" today. This is a simple test. I just prance up a flight of stairs at the hospital. I have been using this method to help me judge my tiredness for over 15 years and its quite effective.

Now, even if I feel tired, sleepy, unmotivated. If I can prance up a flight of stairs and "bounce" the entire way up one flight, it tells me my legs are at or very close to recovery.

If I get half way up and suddenly the second half becomes laborius, and I find I lose the "bounce" then I probably need one more day off the legs.

If, like yesterday, I dont feel that spring in my legs at all....I am beyond a day's recovery.

Today, I felt "bouncy" about half way up. So, I cancelled my planned 7 mile run. Even though it was Z1 recovery...I cancelled.

I am confident tomorrow morning I will be ok though. 3 1/2 days of no running and 2 1/2 days off the bike. I cant be let down because I couldnt complete Olaf's plan early in the week. I came off a well worked race this weekend, of which over 6 miles of my total 19 were in zone 5 and the average HR for all 3 legs was Z4.

I just simply need the rest.

I think this one factor is why I am marginally successful at this sport. You have got to know...or learn how to take rest, without resting too much. You have got to know when to push, without pushing too much, and know when it's time to push the throttle.

I am not perfect, but I think I have a good handle on these things. I wish I could coach this into my athletes. This has been the highest hurdle for me to clear since I have been coaching runners and triathletes.
