The Portland Triathlon

Sunday 9/2 was the first annual city of Portland Triathlon. Downtown Portland. The swim was slow, with 50% against the river current.
The bike was more like a criterium. 6 laps along the waterfront with a total 1500 ft ascent.
The run was decent, with 2 climbs over the bridges, about 200 ft ascent.

Took 3rd overall out of about 300. Ann took 2nd. Fairly happy considering my legs were a bit tired from a tough thursday night Zone 5 interval session on the bike.
My swim of 25 minutes was average, nothing special.
The bike was a slow 22.5 mph, but considering that 1/2 the course was climbing, and managing biking through 300 people because of the multiple laps, I was reasonably happy.
The run was below average at 6:20 per mile pace. The climb up to the steel bridge, which included stairs, slowed me down a little. Plus, ran out of transition with an Oregon State team triathlete and ran a 5:50 first mile to gain a lead on him. This empytied my tank a bit but I held a nice gap for the remainder of the run.

my total time of 2:15 was slow, but I think fairly fast for this course, which is about 10 min. slow compared to flatter courses around.

Ave Power, 1:06 bike split = 323. Happy with this although I was hoping to top 330. Still, this is one of my stronger power rides, esp for over an hour.
Ave HR for the entire race = 143, 1 beat into zone4. Max 155
This tells me I am tired. I should have definately been upwards of 148 for the average.

Teammate Grant Folske won the event, putting 6 minutes on me. It's good to see Grant getting back into shape. He is a strong 30 year old, and I expect he'll gain his Kona slot at Florida in November (I hope).

As far as the training? Legs are considerably tired and like I've said before...barely recovering.
Next week, the week leading into U.S. National 1/2 IM championships, I am scheduled to do 2 Zone 5 interval workouts on the bike, and 2 Zone 4 run interval workouts. Man...I dont think I can handle that. I really dont want to go into Nationals tired. So, I will likely call an audible after discussing with coach to rest a bit more next thursday, instead of the 3 X 6 min. 350Watt intervals, on a 2 hour ride. This seems a bit much 48 hours prior to Nationals.
